More often than not now, I think about my work as play-work, as me working playfully....because I no longer believe in 'working hard'. I like my work and life to feel easier and more joyful.  It's a distinction that makes a difference to how I move through my days.

If it feels hard then I know it's time for me to recalibrate!

That's not to say I don't get busy, never work long hours, or I don't take my work seriously....it's simply a way I've found of having more fun and ease in my working days, by noticing how I'm being, and reminding myself of who I am and how I want to be living and working at this point in my life :-).

And I recognise this could have been the norm for me throughout the whole of my working life, as it's simply a matter of perception. A way of thinking about myself and my work.

It has nothing to do with anyone else, and that applies to you too... It's not the business of your partner, family, employer, work colleagues or staff. Except in the sense of being a great role model.

Because it's not about what you do. It's about how you think about what you do!

So think now about what you say to yourself and others about your work and about your business.

  • Does work feel hard or heavy?
  • Light and fun?
  • Does it depend on when you're asked?
  • Does it depend more on the time of year, day of the week, part of the day, how tired you are, who you've been dealing with, or some other criteria you've set for yourself?

Now consider how you want it to be.  Write down a word or words that feel good to you to apply to your work. Then ask yourself:

  • What will make work fun or playful (or substitute your word)?
  • How can you think about it differently to help with this?
  • What can you do to reinforce this feeling regularly?

Have fun and be curious and playful with the process of exploration. And you might just discover that thinking and feeling about your work differently gives you a whole new perspective, and will enable you to experience a new way of working.
